CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The First Presbyterian Church Learning Center at First Presbyterian Church has opened classes for students. Dianne York is the educator who oversees the center’s operations and talked about the learning center.

“We accommodate all students K-12 and provide individual tutoring for students who are currently enrolled in the Clarksville-Montgomery area of the local schools as well as a home school program,” said York.

York directed the Advantage Learning Center for 20 years in Clarksville and in January 2019 opened the learning center which is on the fourth floor of the education building of the church.

York added the home school program is the base of what the learning center does. They provide small group instruction for students K-12, along with the curriculum, and all of the day-to-day class settings for the students.

The center also has a virtual program that they have offered over the past ten years which York said has really had to ramp up this year. When everything shut down in March, they were able to move seamlessly into their virtual program.

York explained the center’s virtual program is different than most.  “Every student has a large group instruction to start the day, then they break off into small groups with their teacher. After that small group they break off into individual times with their teacher throughout the day,” York said.

The center also has a hybrid program which works when a student is home sick or traveling, or the parents could not make it to the school.  Students can log onto the website and find their tab and can check in with their daily assignment.

There is also a Supplemental Online Assistance Program which is available to any K-12 student in Clarksville-Montgomery County schools or private school and that program is open to families and students anywhere.

With the COVID-19 pandemic all teachers and students in class are wearing masks and face shields, there are temperature checks, hand sanitizer and social distancing.  York said they are trying to make the situation as fun as possible but also keep it as normal as possible.

York said there are currently a few spots available for the in-person classes which are limited to six students, but the online classes are open to a large number of students.
