NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Tennessee Department of Health confirms 371 positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the state, an increase of 143 additional cases in the past 24 hours.
The state’s first fatality related to the global pandemic was a 73-year-old man with underlying health conditions.
“This is a tragic loss of life, and we extend our heartfelt condolences with the family,” Nashville Mayor John Cooper said upon confirming the first virus-related death in the state.
Montgomery County first confirmed a positive case of the virus on Thursday at Tennova Medical Center. Since then, two additional cases were reported, including a student at East Montgomery Elementary School.
Both City Mayor Joe Pitts and County Mayor Jim Durrett have issued a local state of emergency. Local government officials encourage all residents to use their best judgement during the next eight weeks. Practice social distancing, avoid congregating in groups of 10 or more, and stay home if you’re sick.
Those who feel their symptoms align with those of novel coronavirus – shortness of breath, fever, and cough – should contact their primary care provider. The Health Department reminds residents to be tested for COVID-19 at the Health Department they must exhibit all three symptoms.
