CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps, was held Friday evening at McGregor Park in Clarksville. The event, which drew close to 100 people, was organized by the Clarksville Indivisible organization.
Lights for Liberty describes itself as a coalition of people, dedicated to human rights, and the fundamental principle behind democracy that all human beings have a right to life, liberty and dignity.
Organizers said the vigil was part of a worldwide protest of the inhumane conditions faced by migrants being held in U.S. detention camps and to bring light to the darkness of these horrific policies.
Speakers at the event included event organizer, Karen Reynolds with Clarksville Indivisible, also a Bible reading from Lillian Vasquez, a reading from the Qur’an by Taqiyya Deen Washington and a poetry reading by Kryslin Williams from “Let America be America Again.”
Reynolds said there were almost 500 events such as the one held in Clarksville across the nation Friday with 15 of those in Tennessee.
Reynolds added that seeking asylum and coming to the U.S. is not a crime. “Our government is committing crimes by the way they are treating these individuals with neglect and abuse,” said Reynolds.
