CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville police want to remind the public not to fall for the latest ‘warrant on file’ scam.
A 62-year-old woman was called by a person claiming to be from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The person’s name used was actually a real member of the sheriff’s office, but it was someone masquerading as the deputy.
The woman was told she had two warrants on file and unless she paid the fines, she would be arrested. She was told to buy a $500 green dot money card and provide the number for the card.
After she provided the number, she realized she had been scammed, but it was too late.
Attempts to reclaim the card were futile. The victim told the officer the person seemed well-versed at the scam.
Police remind citizens that authorities will not contact you by phone about warrants on file and will not ask for payment by phone with a gift card.
