It is said that you eat first with your eyes, but there is also something to be said for walking into a restaurant where you start salivating because of the delicious aroma that greets you. That was my experience when I walked into Canyon Road Steakhouse and Beer Garden. The scent of a wood fire seemed exactly the right one to pique my curiosity regarding what was on the menu.
This is not just a steakhouse. They do feature steaks: a 10 ounce hand-cut Rib Eye ($20.50), a 6 ounce Baseball Steak ($15), an 18 ounce Tennessee Strip ($24.50) and an 8 ounce Filet Mignon ($29.00), all with sides designed to complement the steaks. But the selections don’t end there… in fact, that is just the beginning of the fun.
If you would like a burger, there are not just beef burgers, though they are available… You can try a whole assortment of flavors: beef and venison (The White Stag), or beef and rabbit (The Hopper), or beef and buffalo (The Canyon Road)… the list goes on. For those who prefer to enjoy a burger without meat, there is a featured veg burger each day (The Grassland). (Prices range between $6-8.50).
Perhaps you would like to try The Wild Side of the menu… Chicken and Waffle, Smoked Ribs, Rack of Lamb, Flat Iron Pork, Mahi Mahi, or a Battered Fish Platter are offered. The menu also gives the option of four salads ($8.50-11.50) and six different sandwiches ($6.50-7).
My friend and I decided to try the Drunken Brat Bites ($6) and Stuffed Mushrooms ($8) to start off our meal. The brat bites are slices of brats dipped in a beer batter and deep fried served with a side of Creole Honey Mustard. They were rich and tasty, and a unique way to enjoy brats. The Stuffed Mushrooms were baby bellas filled with a creamy combination of peppers, bread crumbs and cheese. They were a surprisingly light starter, though I did eat them after the deep fried brats!
My friend ordered the Grilled Chicken Salad: a bed of greens with tomato, cucumber, jalapeño bacon, pickled green tomato, carrots and cheese. She proclaimed it delicious, as were the sweet potato fries she ordered, just to try. I had to try one of the burgers and, upon the recommendation of our server, I went with The Mighty Elk. It came with an aged Porter cheese, baby kale, caramelized onions and grilled tomato. I also ordered the Parmesan Truffle Fries. Having never had elk before, I did not know what to expect, but I enjoyed the leanness of the burger, and the mild flavor. The bun was enormous, making the burger something better to eat in a deconstructed fashion, but that gave me the opportunity to enjoy all of the flavors individually as well.
Canyon Road offers a whole new variety of tastes to the Clarksville food scene, and I am excited that they are here. If you have not had a chance yet to stop by, and you are one who likes the adventure of exploring fun new types of food, I definitely recommended you give them a try.
