CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- (CLARKSVILLENOW) Northwest High School’s Athletic Department selected Hunter Silverstrim and Yarelis Flores Gonzalez as the male and female athletes of the year.

Each month, the Northwest High School Athletic Department selects a male and female Athlete of the Month. At the conclusion of the year, coaches determine the male and female Athlete of the Year from those selected as Athletes of the Month.

Hunter Silverstrim carries a 4.0 GPA and is this year’s Valedictorian. Hunter is described as being driven and has started for the football team for three years. As a leader both in the classroom and on the field, his coaches say he makes his teammates better by pushing them and leading by example. This year, Hunter had thirteen passing touchdowns for 1,253 yards while rushing 57 times for 245 yards and one rushing touchdown. Hunter is also an integral part of the baseball team and has been a baseball athlete for four years as well. His coach calls him a valued leader. In his junior year, he threw two no-hitters and finished his senior season with a 2-2 record on the mound and 2.9 ERA.

Yarelis Flores Gonzalez carries a 3.84 GPA and is a senior basketball and volleyball athlete. She holds memberships in National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Chem Club, and served as class president her ninth and tenth grade years. She has completed community service experiences with the Alzheimer’s Walk, Northwest’s Smokefree initiative, and Manna Cafe. Her coaches describe her as an amazing person with a work ethic, and she leads by example with a humble and sportsmanlike attitude that sets her apart from other athletes.
