NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A bill that would prohibit certain DUI offenders from purchasing alcohol advanced in the Tennessee House this week.

According to the text of the bill, it would require a person convicted of DUI to forfeit the privilege to purchase alcohol for a period of time based upon prior DUI convictions.

After as third conviction, a lifetime purchasing ban would be instituted.

The bill would also establish a new driver license format for DUI offenders who are prohibited from purchasing alcohol.

It also creates a new Class C misdemeanor offense for unlawful purchase of alcohol by DUI offenders or for the knowing sale of alcohol to the offenders.

The bill will be heard in the Finance, Ways & Means Subcommittee next week. It is sponsored by Rep. Bud Hulsey, R-Kingsport and Sen. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains.
