CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Moore Magnet Elementary School held a green ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, October 10 with the Montgomery County Green Certification Program. Moore Magnet, 1350 Madison Street, is the first school in the district to be certified as a green school.

All of the over 500 students from Moore Magnet were dressed in green t-shirts as they sat on the front lawn of the school for the ceremony. A number of local City, County and Clarksville-Montgomery County School System official’s who were also wearing green attended the ceremony.

Moore Magnet Principal, Kim Smith, talked about the significance of the green initiative. “Being a green school is important for our children as we develop those 21st Century skills for them to be productive citizens and know that they have to be good to this environment because this is what the future of their lives will be,” said Smith.

Smith added that she was very proud of the students and staff at Moore Magnet for the ribbon cutting being designated as a green school. Smith said the students have been educated on cutting the lights off when there not in use and not be wasteful with tissue and paper towels.

A ribbon cutting was also held for the school’s new outdoor classroom. The outdoor classroom, near Mericourt Park at the front of the school, will be utilized for plant and water science and will be open to all of the schools in the district.

Smith commented on the outdoor classroom at the school. “We’re so excited today, this is something we’ve been working on for a very long time and we’re just thrilled for our children to be able to go out and have those hands on real world experiences.

The school also held a reception with school tours and an Environmental Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Expo.
