SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (WKRN) – School officials said a gun was confiscated from an elementary school student Thursday morning in Springfield.
WKRN News 2 reports Westside Elementary School was placed on soft lockdown until the police department and Department of Children’s Services (DCS) responded to campus.
According to officials, other students alerted faculty after being shown the gun. The student, who is 7 years old, was then taken to the principal’s office.
A loaded 9mm handgun was found inside his backpack.
Springfield police said the student was cited for unlawful possession of a firearm and released to DCS for placement.
It’s unclear where the gun came from at this time. Springfield police and DCS continue to investigate.
