CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has shut down one lane on I-24 eastbound due to a sinkhole that opened up on the road.

TDOT spokesperson Kathryn Schulte said the truck climbing lane is closed near mile marker 9. Two lanes are still open.

“We had plans to address the pavement issues in the area today, but we had to call it off because of weather. We are going to keep the lane closed until we can get the paving crew in tomorrow (March 20),” Schulte said.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the TDOT are on the scene.

No estimate of how long repairs will take or how long the eastbound lanes will be closed has been given. Eastbound drivers are urged to find alternate routes and avoid the area.

Traffic in the area was backed about for approximately two miles Monday morning.
