CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A smoke alarm installed just one day before a house fire may have saved a man’s life.

The fire occurred Sunday around 6:20 a.m. at a home on Sunset Court.

When firefighters arrived, the home was already completely engulfed, but the sole occupant of the home had already escaped.

On Saturday, The Red Cross and Clarksville Fire Rescue had canvassed the neighborhood, knocking on doors and installing smoke alarms in homes that were not already equipped with them.

According to Fire Marshal Ray Williams, that home was one of them.

“He said that smoke alarm came on and that’s what alerted him, that’s what helped save his life,” Williams said. “It’s good to see that something that we did helped save his life.”

Officials said the fire was started by unattended grease in the kitchen.

The home was totally destroyed. The Red Cross is assisting the man, who is now displaced.
