NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A bill that would allow faculty and staff at higher education facilities in Tennessee to carry properly permitted weapons on campus will be heard next week in a TN Senate Committee.

WKRN News 2 reports that the measure was proposed by Senator Mike Bell of East Tennessee within days of the October shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, where a gunman killed nine people before shooting himself.

The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, but higher education officials have signaled they hope for a compromise.

A compromise might include additional training for permit holders that would mimic a live shooter situation.

A school knowing who had permitted weapons and where might also be part of the compromise.
