MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – Following the June 26 Supreme Court declaration that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States, Tennessee county clerks can issue marriage licenses immediately.
Montgomery County Clerk Kellie Jackson confirmed that the Tennessee attorney general advised county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses, with the formal statement to come during a 2 p.m. press conference on Friday.
As of noon on Friday, Jackson said of the licenses, “If anyone comes in at this point, we will issue them.”
Same-sex couples applying for marriage licenses should note that they are responsible for finding officials for their individual ceremonies. The Montgomery County Clerk’s Office has an informational board set up at the front of the building listing the contact information of possible officiates such as ministers and county commissioners.
The Montgomery County Clerk’s Office is located at 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 502. For more information, call 931-648-5711.
