CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – WKRN News 2 reports that according to arrest affidavits, the two Fort Campbell soldiers accused in the shooting death of a 2-year-old boy spoke to each other before and after the murder

Joseph Bankston died on Oct. 4 after police said Zackery Alexander entered a Clarksville home and “intentionally” killed him.

Following Alexander’s arrest on Oct. 14, the child’s stepfather, 23-year-old David Wi, was also taken into custody on charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

His arrest affidavits stated phone records show Wi spoke to Alexander just before and just after the murder.

The documents also say Wi, who was in a child custody battle with his wife, had requested the birth and social security records for their child.

Wi was reportedly listed as the beneficiary of life insurance policies on his wife, daughter, and now-murdered 2-year-old Joseph.

Police said he is the only connection between Alexander and his family.

Also revealed in arrest affidavits was the evidence police gathered against Alexander.

Authorities stated he was identified after photos of him, provided to them through the investigation, revealed “several similarities” to the sketch of the suspect.

Once Alexander was identified, he consented to a search of his vehicle where officers say they found a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson M&P. The weapons matched shell casings found at the murder scene.

Both Alexander and Wi remain in the Montgomery County jail on $5 million bonds. They’re due in court Oct. 29.
