“It’s just a great feeling. I love to see people gather and have a good time and when I walked up here to see a couple hundred people having fun, enjoying this beautiful weather, they now have a place to do it in,” Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett said. “That’s really the name of the commons, it’s all about a gathering place for the people, so I think we’ve created that and I think greater things are yet to come.”
The ribbon cutting began with the launch of the downtowncommons.org site provided by Google. A study six years ago began talks about the site which was followed by a groundbreaking in November of 2016. The site was first known as the civic square or civic plaza and it officially became The Downtown Commons after it was announced at a Topping Out Ceremony in September of last year.
In August of 2017 Paula Atkins was named Event program Manager for the Downtown Commons. Norman Quirion, Executive Director of the Two Rivers Commission spoke about many of the events planned for the public at the site, saying the commission was grateful for the enthusiasm and support from the community for the Downtown Commons.
One of the first events at the Downtown Commons will be the unveiling of the new Imagination Playground on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. for military families recognizing April as the month of the military child. The Downtown Commons has been selected as one of the grant sites for an Imagination Playground because of Montgomery County’s strong connection to Fort Campbell families.
The Inaugural Concert Series for the Downtown Commons Downtown @ Sundown will begin in May and continue through October.
Downtown @ Sundown Concerts will be held on the third Friday of the month beginning in May.
