DICKSON, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Steven Wiggins, the man accused of shooting and killing Sgt. Daniel Baker in May, is due in court Tuesday afternoon.
According to WKRN News 2, preliminary hearings for Wiggins and his alleged accomplice Erika Castro-Miles will begin in Dickson around 2 p.m.
Sgt. Baker was shot and killed after he responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on May 30. Wiggins and Castro-Miles were reportedly found inside a stolen car.
According to an affidavit, Baker was shot when he ordered the pair out of the car. Castro-Miles was taken into custody later the same day and Wiggins was captured several days later after an intense manhunt.
Both face first-degree premeditated murder. The state says it will seek the death penalty for Wiggins.
An autopsy revealed Baker suffered six gunshot wounds – two to his torso, one to his hand and three to the side of his head.
Wiggins told authorities he tried to perform CPR on Baker. Body cam footage does not show that. He also said he fired the additional shots because he “didn’t want the man [Baker] to suffer.”
Wiggins is being held in a Nashville jail and will be transported to Dickson Tuesday for the hearing. He will be wearing Sgt. Baker’s handcuffs and a bulletproof vest. Castro-Miles will also be wearing a bulletproof vest.
Jail records indicate family members have visited Wiggins while he has been jailed.
Sgt. Baker’s family is expected to attend Tuesday’s hearing. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Meredith.
