CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Tennessee River Chapter of the American Red Cross is sending local volunteers to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. One volunteer, Jeannie Decker, left Sunday for disaster assessment in the area.

Katy Hagstrom, Executive Director of the Red Cross said volunteers Dominic Aponte and Foster Montgomery left the Clarksville office Monday morning in an emergency response vehicle. Another volunteer, Mark Turner left on an emergency response vehicle from Nashville earlier in the day.

Montgomery talked about helping out the people in the area hit by flooding. “I feel really good and proud about going down and doing it because I was a victim of the flood in 2010. Everybody came to help me so this is my second disaster for the floods and I’m really proud to go,” said Montgomery.

Hagstrom said both Aponte and Montgomery will be going to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to stage and when they are called to go in they will be given their location at that time and that Red Cross chapters from across the nation are responding to the disaster.

Hagstrom added that thousands of volunteers will be utilized and because of the massive relief effort, they are asking people to go to 1-800-red-cross or redcross.org, or text harvey to 90999 and make a $10 donation. “Those donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and recover from this disaster,” said Hagstrom.
