Review by Pamela Holz, Realtor with Reliant Realty

I love finding a great spot to have a quick and delicious lunch. If you have yet to try Kooka’s Nest, you are in for a treat! The shop, located next to the Children Fountain on Strawberry Alley, beckons you in with its brightly colored flags. The interior décor is just the right amount of fun pictures and delightful colors which help to accentuate the varieties of candies and crafts available for purchase.

But the main attraction is definitely the food. Items like the Kooka Dog, the Underdog, the Chihuahua Dog, the Mighty Dog, and the Double Dog Dare all come with a side, as do the sandwiches and wraps. The fillings for the sandwiches and wraps include pimento cheese, tuna, chicken, shrimp… really too many to mention. You also have the option of having a salad, a hot sub, or a bowl of chili. And if you are feeling particularly un-virtuous, you can skip the delicious healthy lunch options and go right for the desserts! All sorts of floats– including the Pineapple Mountain Goat, the Lime Lizard and the Orange Dreamsicle—or a sundae, or the Grandaddy of them all, the Giant Nanner Split…. Because some days you just have to live a little on the wild side!

Upon recommendation of my hair gal, I ordered the Shrimp Salad Wrap with a side of Broccoli Salad. I was thankful that the wrap was also wrapped in paper, because it was so stuffed with this amazing shrimp salad—tons of shrimp and celery in a mayonnaise base with a hint of spice—that it would have been impossible to contain otherwise. The Broccoli Salad was delicious, full of broccoli, nuts, dried fruit and cabbage—YUM! My friend ordered the chicken salad on a hoagie, and again, the amount of the chicken salad was immense… and intensely delectable. The potato salad side was also a great hit.

In the spirit of giving a complete review, we decided to share a dessert—freshly baked chocolate chip cookies with a creamy Oreo-like filling topped with a chocolate kiss. Decadent and definitely best shared, as it was very sweet!

Mike and Krista (“Kooka”) Winstead have hit upon quite possibly the perfect little shop. They serve lunch from 10:30- 4 every day except Sundays. Kooka makes simple but deliciously filling foods, and they both work to make all of the customers feel like welcomed friends. Take the time to enjoy this treasure on Strawberry Alley!
