CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – It really is a drive through the woods and over the river to get to Grandma’s Apron. Located off Highway 13, just after crossing the Cumberland, Grandma’s Apron is a new restaurant located in the old Catfish House location.
Walking into the restaurant, you get a wonderful whiff of smoky deliciousness… and see that barbecue is on the menu. The meats offered change daily, but on my visit the offerings were ribs, fried catfish, and the ever-present BBQ.
The set-up is a cafeteria-style meat and three. You are invited to choose a table, get your drink, and then wind your way through the line, just like you did in grade school, indicating to the apron-clad server behind the counter the choices you would like to have.
My friend decided to try the fried catfish, which came with two hush puppies, along with green beans, corn and apples. I went with the ribs, fried sweet potatoes (sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar), fried okra and coleslaw. We were also offered the choice of a roll, a sweet cornbread muffin, or a square of cornbread.
My friend is the first to admit that she has pretty simple tastes when it comes to food, but she is particular about the temperature of her food. We both agreed that lukewarm wasn’t the temperature we preferred, but as it is cafeteria-style, perhaps that is to be expected. I thought the nibble I had of her catfish was tasty, but she found the middle to be a bit mushy. Her favorite item was the corn, which was pleasantly sweet and pretty with its combination of white and yellow kernels. The hushpuppies were delightfully greasy deep fried cornbread doughnut holes with green peppers.
My ribs had a good smoky flavor and required a few napkins to properly enjoy them. The coleslaw was tangy and creamy. The fried sweet potatoes and okra would probably have been better piping hot, but again, when under a heat lamp, perhaps that shouldn’t be expected.
The atmosphere is very reminiscent of a Grandma’s house, with antique kitchen utensils and colorful aprons hung on the walls, along with cute plaques reminding us that Grandma’s kitchen is a wonderful place to be. We were checked on by a sweet Grandma wearing a colorful apron. We appreciated her attentiveness, and that she made us feel welcome.
With the convenient location for Clarksville residents who live over the river, Grandma’s Apron has potential to become an easy spot for families to make their go-to place for a simple, quick, and easy meal.
