CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (Clarksvillenow.com) Demolition began Thursday morning on what’s known as the old Bank of America building in downtown Clarksville with Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett operating the equipment that struck the first blow and took down a section of the building’s wall.

Mayor Durrett talked about the demolition and the proposed civic plaza project. “If something good happens downtown it’s good for Montgomery County and I think the civic plaza is going to be that and this is the start of the civic plaza” said Durrett.

The work is expected to take from around 10 days to two weeks. Don Morgan with Morgan Contractors said there could be the possibility of a few temporary street closures around the site but they would probably only last for a few minutes at a time.

The demolition downtown covers the square block area of 2nd, Legion, 3rd, and Main Streets. Along with the bank structure, the former site of the Better Business Bureau and the Regions Bank parking lot are also part of the civic plaza project.

At this time no actual design for the civic plaza has been decided on. Durrett has said he believes when the civic plaza is finished it will be a destination place for downtown Clarksville, it’s going to attract a lot of people and it’s one of the steps we need to revitalize downtown.
