CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The plan to buy property for a proposed multi-sport athletic complex failed on second reading by a 7-6 vote at the Clarksville City Council regular session Thursday night.
The Council chambers as well as the adjoining hallway were filled with supporters of the plan to purchase the 409-acre site on Rossview Road near Exit 8 on Interstate 24 and would have become what was being called the Clarksville Family Athletic Complex.
The Tennessee State Soccer Association had expressed interest in managing and maintaining a statewide soccer park and training facility and National Sports Services had proposed a partnership for Summer Collegiate Baseball.
In June of last year the City Council approved Mayor Kim McMillan’s recommendation to include $6.5 million in the 2017-18 city budget to purchase the property for an athletic complex. On April 26 in a special session the ordinance passed the Council 6-5 on first reading.
Council members that voted down the purchase included David Allen, Mike Alexander, Jeff Burkhart, Ron Erb, Richard Garrett, Deanna McLaughlin and Wanda Smith.
Council members voting yes were Tim Chandler, Valerie Guzman, Geno Grubbs, Jeff Henley and Bill Powers. McMillan also voted in favor of the purchase.
