CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Clarksville City Council approved a charter commission on consolidating city and county governments to one metropolitan governing body.
The council voted 10 to 2 Thursday night. The Montgomery County Commission is scheduled to vote on the issue at its next meeting Monday, May 8.

If approved by both bodies the charter commission would develop a new charter that would go before voters. If passed, city and county government operations could be merged into one unified jurisdiction, consolidating some government services.
Supporters are hoping to put consolidated government before voters next year.
