CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Austin Peay State University’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) will host a rally for transgender students locally and across the country Thursday, March 2 at the Morgan University Center plaza on campus.
The rally is scheduled for 1-3 p.m.
The event was organized in response to last week’s announcement that the Trump administration will revoke guidelines that say transgender students should be allowed to use bathrooms and locker rooms matching their chosen gender identity.
According to APSU GSA, these protections included access to proper restrooms, access to proper university housing, privacy regarding transgender status (including sex assigned at birth and name given at birth), and more.
“Now that the federal government is stepping away from protecting transgender students, it is up to us to tell our communities that TRANS STUDENTS ARE WELCOME HERE!” GSA said in a Facebook post.
Faculty, staff, students, and members of the Clarksville community are invited to attend the rally and encouraged to bring signs and flags to show support.
“We want this to be a strong, positive display to the APSU community that we love and support transgender students (past, present, and future), and that there are people here on their side,” the post said.
