Story by Debbie McConnell
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The inaugural Run For Your Lives Zombie Fun Run on October 5 was not just a chance to run for your life – it was a chance to run for the lives of those who battle cystic fibrosis every day.
25 zombies and over 100 runners gathered at Rotary Park for a fun morning to raise funds and awareness for the cystic fibrosis foundation. $2,000 was raised to support research, care and education for our CF families.
In 1955, the life expectancy of a child born with cystic fibrosis was just 4 years old. Today, thanks to events such as this and the CF Foundation’s ability to use 90% of all fundraising dollars for research – almost half of the CF population is over 18, life expectancy has risen to 38, and 4% of the CF population are not getting any sicker thanks to the miracle of Kalydeco.
We do not consider 19 middle age. The Clarksville cystic fibrosis group hosts events year-round to support the CFF and our Clarksville CF families. The money we raise in our area stays in our area. We do not receive any government funding – the CFF is largely volunteer run. Your support is making the difference.
Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 Americans – that we know of. One in thirty people are unknowing, symptomless carriers of the CF gene.
