The Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Women in Business luncheon started like many successful community gatherings: with handshakes, hugs, exchanged business cards and professionals reconnecting before the program began.
By the time featured speaker Angela S. Martin stepped up to deliver her message, “Be Bold, Be Beautiful, Be Balanced,” at Tanglewood House on July 29, the room was full of energy. The monthly event hosted by the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce brought local professionals together for an afternoon of encouragement, practical perspective and the kind of connection that continues long after lunch is over.

For Martin, the theme was more than the title of her presentation. It was an invitation for women leading teams, raising families and pursuing their own goals to remember their worth in the middle of it all.
“Being bold means having the confidence to know your value and use your voice,” Martin said. “Being beautiful isn’t about appearance; it’s about the character, authenticity and kindness that shine from within. And being balanced is recognizing that you can’t pour into everyone else if your own cup is empty.”
Taking care of yourself is essential
Martin’s message was shaped by years of mentoring young women and seeing a familiar pattern: capable, accomplished women giving everything to careers and families while leaving little for themselves.
“I wanted women to understand that taking care of themselves isn’t selfish; it’s essential,” she said. “When women recognize their worth, embrace who they are and invest in themselves, they become stronger leaders, better partners, better parents and ultimately happier people.”

For Melinda Shepard, executive director of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, the luncheon reflected why the Chamber continues to invest in Women in Business programming.
Women-owned businesses and women leaders are an important part of the local economy, she said, and supporting them helps drive job growth, innovation, member engagement and stronger business relationships across Clarksville-Montgomery County.
Shepard also believes Women in Business events serve as a welcoming entry point for new Chamber members and professionals looking for a place to plug in. “These events lower the barriers to finding a mentor,” she said. “Young professionals, startup founders and rising managers get direct access to established executives and business owners in a warm, collaborative setting.”

The atmosphere at the luncheon helped carry that message. Shepard described it as “high-energy with a cozy vibe,” where attendees could relax, talk openly and leave with ideas they could use right away. One attendee shared that she planned to incorporate some of Martin’s recommendations into her daily routine to see whether they helped her find more balance.
‘Every journey is built on choice’
Among Shepard’s takeaways from Martin’s presentation was the message, “Every journey is built on choice.” Another message that stood out was that “when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.”
For the women gathered in Clarksville, “Be Bold, Be Beautiful, Be Balanced” was a reminder that balance is not a retreat from ambition but something that sustains it. “You don’t lose ambition by taking care of yourself. You sustain it,” Martin said. “Balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about intentionally making sure you don’t disappear while taking care of everyone else.”
That is the larger goal of the Chamber’s Women in Business programming: to create spaces where local professionals can learn, be encouraged and grow their networks beyond a single luncheon. Shepard said the lunch may bring women into the room, but it can also open doors to opportunities outside of it.
