CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A Clarksville woman who was apparently smoking in bed while on oxygen died in a fire Wednesday afternoon.

At about 2:50 p.m., a private ambulance service went to pick up the woman for dialysis treatment at her Parc at Clarksville apartment at 441 Needmore Road, according to Clarksville Fire Rescue Capt. Michael Rios.

They heard her fire alarm going off and opened her door. Smoke billowed out, Rios said.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes and found that the fire had been extinguished by a sprinkler system, but smoke filled the rooms. The 61-year-old resident was in her bedroom and had no pulse. Firefighters tried CPR but she succumbed to her injuries, Rios said.

It appeared the fire started because the woman was smoking in bed while on oxygen, Rios said.
