CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A woman has been charged with second-degree murder in the fentanyl death of a 12-year-old child.
Meredith York Woods, 47, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder by the November term of the Montgomery County Grand Jury. The indictment, obtained by Clarksville Now, states that between June 12 and 13, she killed a child identified only as A.H., age 12, “by the unlawful delivery, unlawful distribution or unlawful dispensation of fentanyl.” No further details have been provided, including the relationship between Woods and A.H., as the case is pending prosecution.
Clarksville Now has attempted to reach Woods for comment.
Previous fentanyl-related arrest
Just two months prior to the child’s death, Woods was found slumped in a car with fentanyl and drug paraphernalia, police said. On April 20, Clarksville Police were called to a welfare check in the parking lot of the Madison Street Walmart, according to an arrest warrant. An employee had found her in the driver’s seat of a black Escalade in the parking lot, with the engine running, and was unable to wake her by knocking on the window and yelling.
Police arrived and said Woods had slurred speech and failed all field sobriety tests. They found a “white, powdery substance within the defendant’s reach” that tested positive for fentanyl, according to the warrant. They also found a bag containing burnt aluminum foil, plastic pipes and a syringe. She was charged with DUI, first offense. She failed to appear on that charge on Oct. 29.
On Nov. 18, Woods was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on the murder charge, plus the DUI and an unrelated theft charge. Her next court date is scheduled for March 12.
