So, we have all seen the big stinky trucks running through town, with hoses wrapped around them, on the way to pump out a septic tank, right? Well, as a homeowner, why is it important to have that done?
You hear two sides of the coin: Homeowner 1 gets their tank pumped out and cleaned every three to five years as a maintenance item for their home, and Homeowner 2 has never had theirs done. Lots of folks think that if you are careful with what you put down the drain, then you never need to get your tank pumped. I myself thought this way the whole time I was growing up, even for a few years as a professional plumber, until I learned the ins and outs of a septic system.
Turns out, Homeowner 1 is right! What happens if you don’t have your tank pumped every few years? Is it worth the money? Now we’re talking!
How septic systems work
A septic system is a very simple, yet effective design. It works by way of seeping, or “leaching” effluent (wastewater) into the earth slowly, through a series of field lines. Notice I said wastewater, not waste. Waste and effluent both make their into the tank when you flush the commode, and bacteria in the tank breaks down the solids over time in the first compartment of your tank. Inside the second compartment should just be effluent only, as it is making its way to the field lines to be dispersed in the earth. Improper maintenance can lead to those remaining solids, and grease as well, to get into the field lines. When this happens, those solids can plug up weep holes, or plug an entire field line.
I think we know what happens next: You end up with a failed septic system that costs a whole lot more to repair than a simple maintenance every few years would’ve been.
Bottom line: Get it pumped
Pumping a septic tank, although not appealing or exciting, is definitely a must-do maintenance item for your home. It prolongs the life of your system, helps prevent any major issues and/or inconveniences, and also gives you the utmost peace of mind! For something that only has to be done every three to five years, it’s a no-brainer to keep your home happy and healthy.
