CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Gas and Water (CGW) has recently received complaints from consumers about the smell and taste of their tap water. However, CGW’s Manager Mark Riggins confirmed that the water is still safe for people to drink and use.

The warm and dry Tennessee weather seems to be the culprit behind these issues, according to a news release from CGW. The lack of rain has led to reduced rivers and blooming algae. This algae gives the tap water a new “earthy” taste that concerns Clarksville residents. Riggins acknowledges that the effects of the algae bloom are not ideal, but asks the community for patience while they work to correct this temporary issue.

“I assure citizens that Clarksville’s water is safe to drink and use for daily use,” Riggins said in the news release. “Although temporary, I understand that the taste and odor from the algae bloom is offensive and I express my appreciation to the community and ask for understanding as our water system works through the warm and dry conditions and the issues it has naturally produced.”

CGW predicts these issues will be resolved with the incoming rain and cooler weather. Carbon filters can help ease the smell and taste of the algae until the regular tap water flavor is restored.
