Update, 12:08 p.m. on Jan. 28: Doretha Minor with Manna Cafe Ministries told Clarksville Now that the non-profit will be open Thursday, with limited staff, and on Friday too.

“We should be able to do grocery distribution on Friday,” Minor added. “I am hoping that if people are not in dire need, they don’t attempt to come out. I (just) don’t want anyone to get hurt trying to get to us. There will probably be long waits also.”

Thursday’s meal will be served out of Manna Cafe’s kitchen, 503 D Street, and the entrance is on Oak Street. The non-profit is expected to be back to normal services on Monday.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – For those that have been affected by the cold and icy conditions over the last several days, here are some resources for a warm place, which includes some nonprofits that are offering additional community support.

Loaves & Fishes

For over 40 years, Loaves & Fishes has stood in the gap to provide the very basic necessity of food to the hungry in the community, according to their website. They rescue food from grocery stores, restaurants and individuals to provide hot and nutritious meals every day.

This week, they have opened a daytime warning center through Saturday with extended hours running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Loaves & Fishes is at 825 Crossland Ave. Visit their website to volunteer or learn more. The nonprofit can be reached at 931-645-9020.

The Canopy Initiative

According to the City of Clarksville, The Canopy Initiative’s mission is to unite community partners, service providers, and individuals with lived experience, in a compassionate and coordinated response to homelessness through advocacy, prevention, and access to supportive services that address both its causes and impact in Clarksville-Montgomery County.

More than 30 members make up the coalition, and several local organizations are working together to provide emergency services through a collaborative sheltering effort, ensuring that all those in need are served.

Clarksville Urban Ministries

Led by Clarksville Urban Ministries, Madison St. Methodist Church at 100 Commerce St., is sheltering men for Canopy Initiative.

According to Urban Ministries Executive Director Jodi McBryant, over this past weekend, the Emergency Warming Shelters have operated on a 24/7 basis. “We will continue this at least through Tuesday,” McBryant told Clarksville Now.

“We continue to urge our unhoused friends to come to shelter. These temperatures are extremely dangerous, and we do not want anyone to risk their lives. We have good hot food, warm beds, clean dry clothes and showers,” she said.

According to previous reports, the men’s emergency shelter provided a safe haven for 73 men last night.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, located at 210 Kraft St., is housing women and families for The Canopy Initiative. A few families have been placed into hotel rooms, because the family rooms at the Salvation Army were full of 31 women and children, McBryant said.

Salvation Army spokesperson Eric Short told Clarksville Now there are now 13 Salvation Army warming centers open across Kentucky and Tennessee, including here in Clarksville. “These facilities are providing warmth, safety and critical support to individuals and families impacted by power outages and extreme cold,” said Short.

“While the snow and ice may be gone, the danger is far from over,” said Scott Tibbets, Emergency Disaster Services Director for The Salvation Army. “Extended power outages combined with prolonged subfreezing temperatures create serious and ongoing risks. Our teams are committed to walking alongside these communities for as long as it takes – providing warmth, nourishment, emotional support, and hope as Kentucky and Tennessee recover from this storm.”

Manna Cafe Ministries

Due to weather conditions, Manna Cafe Ministries was closed Tuesday and is expected to be closed Wednesday as well. This includes a pause in their grocery cart distribution and hot meals at Lincoln Homes.

“We are hoping to resume services as soon as possible, but we will update you as soon as we know more,” Manna Cafe said. “We hope you all are staying safe and warm, we will see you soon.”
