CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Anytime there is a threat of bitterly cold temperatures or other weather related emergency the Room in the Inn program of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Action Agency (CMCCAA) is there to help.

Robert Davis, Program Director for CMCAA says Room in the Inn works with close to 20 local churches who take their clients in when severe weather strikes. The program starts each year on November 1 and goes through March 31 of the following year.

From November 1 of 2015 through early January of this year Davis says Room in the Inn has helped well over 300 individuals as well as families in need, and with colder weather those numbers are growing.

Davis praised local churches for their support of Room in the Inn saying each church picks the dates they would like to provide service and also choose the clients they would like to help depending on what facilities they have available when help is needed.

Each day a staff member from Room in the Inn will call the church and tell them what is needed and at that point the people seeking help will meet at the Old Firehouse Day Shelter on Golf Club Lane and the church will provide transportation for them to the church.

There they will be fed and have a place to sleep for the night and then they are returned to the Old Firehouse the next morning. Davis also talked about how the Old Firehouse can help people in another way.

“We are a warming shelter here in Montgomery County so if anyone wants to come in they don’t have to be homeless to come in to get warm and stay in our place and we will give them a meal during our hours of operation which is 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday,” said Davis.

“If you need a safe and secure environment to stay in, come to the Old Firehouse Day Shelter and let us sign you up for Room in the Inn instead of being in an abandoned building or somewhere that’s not safe,” Davis said.

To learn more about the Room in the Inn program, call the Old Firehouse Day Shelter at 931-542-0381 or stop by at 1498 Golf Club Lane. A staff member will help you fill out an application and you will be ready to receive assistance.
