CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – West Creek’s Yahsir Thomas has committed to Austin Peay State University to continue his athletic and academic career after accepting a preferred walk on role with the Governors.

The standout senior running back shared what it meant to be surrounded by teammates, classmates and family during his reveal ceremony.

“It felt good,” Thomas said. “They were really supportive. Everyone that was there helped me in one way or another. Mostly my mom who got me through a lot of stuff.”

During his final year as a Coyote, Thomas eclipsed 500 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards and finished with 10 total touchdowns.

Ever since Thomas can remember he’s excelled on the gridiron and is thrilled to see his hard work pay off by getting an opportunity to play Division I football.

“I really pushed myself every day to get to where I am now,” Thomas said. “I feel like nothing can take that away.”

For Thomas, the thought of playing football at the next level was always in the back of his mind while taking care of business on the field and in the classroom remained at the forefront.

“I started playing when I was five,” Thomas said. “I always wanted to just keep getting better and continued that same mindset over the years. I never stopped and being here now has become like a dream come true.”

Thomas is extremely thankful for Austin Peay head coach Mark Hudspeth and his coaching staff for believing in his ability.

“I wanted to stay home with my family,” Thomas said of his decision. “I feel like he’s a great coach and I like how he saw something in me to actually look at me, offer me and give me a chance.”
