CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (ESPN CLARKSVILLE) – With high school football only 15 weeks away, spring practice is in full swing for most area teams. This includes the West Creek Coyotes.

The last two seasons have not been very kind to West Creek football. The Coyotes are 1-19.

Some might say it couldn’t get much worse; that is, unless your name is James Figueroa. The second year head coach knows what kind of team he has, and has changing the culture of Coyote football at the top of his list. He also knows this year’s team is shaping out to be a little different than the past two Coyote teams.

“The difference in this team and the last year’s team is they believe in themselves to go out and compete together, and they are closer has a team. They hold themselves accountable for their actions in the classroom and on the field,” Figueroa said. “I talked about playing for each other and doing things the right way. We need to take care of the football. We had so many turnovers last year in some games that cost us. We played great on defense where we forced 15 turnovers and had 14 sacks. We have to continue to do that on defense in 2017.”

Spring practice has its purpose and for West Creek, finding guys to compete is high on the list.

“I want us to be more physical up front on the offensive line. I believe those guys will be the ones who will make this team better. We need to find some playmakers who can carry this team,” Figueroa said. “We scrimmage Hillwood next week. I want us to play Nine Units Strong and be injury-free going in for the fall.”

The Coyotes have added former Northeast head coach Terry Arrington as their new offensive coordinator. The team will also suit up 26 seniors this upcoming season. They open up their 2017 season on the road at White House Heritage on August 18. Follow the Coyotes on twitter @westcreek_FB.
