CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A new budget report from President Trump’s administration released this week shows several deep cuts to federal agencies.
According to media reports, these cuts could affect the nationwide Meals on Wheels program, which provides hot meals and companionship for the elderly and disabled.
Over 9.5 million meals are served to seniors age 60 and older in Middle Tennessee through the program.
Hot meals are planned by a registered dietician and prepared in a commercial kitchen Monday–Friday and delivered to the meal sites. Volunteers deliver the meals to each eligible person in the program.
Research shows that seniors who have pets also have fewer physician appointments—21 percent fewer visits than those who do not own a pet. So in response, Meals on Wheels has also partnered with various vendors to offer pet food delivery through AniMeals.
