CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Walmart Foundation is helping fight hunger in Tennessee by awarding 14 hunger-related nonprofits a total of $519,000 in grants. Manna Café received $35,000 to use in the expansion of the Pickin’ Up Manna food rescue program.

Through this program, the organization collects more than one million pounds of surplus and mislabeled food from stores and restaurants. Nearly 400 thousand pounds of this rescued food consists of breakfast items from eight local elementary schools. Specifically, grant funds will allow Manna Café to add 3 to 4 additional schools in the coming year.

Items (including fresh fruit, cereal bars, milk, pancakes, yogurt, and sandwiches) will then be distributed to roughly 14,000 local low-income residents of Clarksville and Montgomery County through the food pantry and soup kitchen programs.
