Contributed commentary by Xaviel Lugo, a CMCSS parent, on school vouchers being opposed by the City Council:

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) faces critical scrutiny in light of Gov. Bill Lee’s proposed Education Freedom Scholarship Act. The central concern is the perceived lack of accountability within CMCSS, particularly when addressing systemic issues such as bullying and educational shortcomings.

Councilperson Karen Reynolds has publicly voiced opposition to the voucher program, stating, “The state Legislature should not usurp our local authority to make these decisions. Such actions constitute an overreach of government.” However, this stance raises questions about parental rights in determining the optimal educational path for their children.

The current debate highlights a broader issue: the disparity in funding and resources between schools in affluent neighborhoods and those in underserved communities. The proposed voucher program aims to bridge this gap, offering parents the freedom to choose the best educational environment for their children, be it public, charter, private, faith-based, or homeschooling.

Ultimately, the decision-making power regarding a child’s education should reside with the parents and the child, rather than being dictated by political agendas or individual council members. The voucher program represents a step towards educational equity, ensuring that all children, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to quality education.
