CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County was a busy place Monday as more than 50 volunteers worked at the Habitat Restore in Clarksville as part of the national day of service – a day on, not a day off – to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.

The volunteers helped with tasks like cleaning, straightening and rearranging items in the ReStore to make more room for other merchandise. Areas like the ReStore Community Room and other rooms received new paint and other touch-ups.

Barb Petrik is the Habitat for Humanity Restore Committee Chairman and talked about what the help means to her and the ReStore.

“This is just amazing. The volunteers that are coming in today are making the store look better, easier to shop, new items are being put on the floor to be sold, and the money that comes from this store help build our homes,” said Petrik.

Rob Selkow, the executive director for Habitat for Humanity in Montgomery County, told Clarksville Now that the volunteers are a crucial part of what they do.

“We have two full-time people at our Habitat offices, so the vast majority of  the work that gets done is done through volunteers,” said Selkow.

Montgomery County Commissioner Rashidah Leverett serves District 5, which is where the Habitat ReStore is located at 404 Madison St. Leverett said she enjoys spending time working in the community.

“We have to be in the community helping people, that’s what we do. I think it’s important for me as a commissioner to let people know I’m accessible, and I think it’s important for all elected officials to be visible,” said Leverett.

A number of organizations supported the work at the Habitat ReStore on the MLK Day of Service including the Clarksville Association of Realtors and their nonprofit Spreading our Support (SOS) Foundation, which helps the community when there is a need.

Along with their volunteer work at the ReStore, the SOS Foundation is also working to build houses in Clarksville-Montgomery with the president of the organization, Melanie Lacasse, saying they feel it’s  important to give back to the community.

The Habitat ReStore is open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. To schedule a pickup of donated items or for more information about the ReStore, call 931-645-4242 or email donate@clarksvillerestore.org. Donations can also be dropped off at the ReStore, 404 Madison St.
