CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Military veterans transitioning back into civilian life have the potential to explore a number of options. Retirement, public service, or a second career, including farming, are opportunities available to veterans.

The Montgomery County Veterans Coalition and the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) are hosting a free Agricultural Entrepreneurship Informational session for veterans interested in exploring the agricultural industry. The event will be held on July 31 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic, 755 Weatherly Drive.

The unemployment rate for the latest generation of veterans dropped below 4 percent in 2018, for the first time ever. According to data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 3.8-percent annual unemployment rate for 2018 continues a seven-year trend of declines since 2011.

Although unemployment rates have improved, there is still a percentage of veterans unable to work in a traditional work setting due to boredom, depression, or the inability to adapt. For many veterans farming is a new passion that allows them to find peace and purpose in saving agriculture.

“On a weekly basis I am given the opportunity to engage with veterans who have an interest in the farming industry,” Lorneth Peters, TSBDC director, said. “This event is an extension of what we do on a weekly basis. Ensuring the men and women who served our country are equipped with the information needed to be successful in farming.”

During the event, participants will hear from military veteran, Charlie Jordan, of the Tennessee Farmer Veteran Coalition and Karla Kean, an Extension Agent for TN State University of Tennessee Cooperative Extension program. The topics covered will include opportunities in farming, industrial hemp, and ways to be involved in the Tennessee Veteran Farmer’s Coalition.

The Veterans Coalition continues to work together for the betterment of the veteran community. For more concerning the Coalition, to donate, or to volunteer, contact Coalition Executive Director Mrs. Sherry Pickering at 931-801-0700 or sherry@vetcoalition.org.
