CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – T&D Island Spices, the longest standing Caribbean cuisine establishment in Clarksville, is owned by veteran Tarmel Rhoden and his wife Marva Rhoden- Rascoe. The restaurant has become a staple in the area. Anyone can satisfy their palates by enjoying an array of island flavored entrees.
As Rhoden’s military career was ending, he was preparing for the next phase of his life. After completing career assessments and research on his personality type, he found opening his own business was a strong opportunity.
Figuring out what business to open required more research. The lack of island inspired food in the area provided him the opportunity to fill a void. T&D Island Spices became a reality in 2015.
His wife, Marva, inspired the idea for a Jamaican restaurant. “She supported me through every military assignment and it was now my chance to support her dream of owning a business,” said Rhoden. “She is such a great cook and all my American friends raved about her food.”
Since opening the first location in 2015, the business has exceeded their expectations. The influx of return customers, led to the demand for a food truck. The business has also expanded now boasting two brick and mortar locations. The first was on State Line Road. Their newest location is off Trenton Road and opened Summer 2019.
When asked about challenges, the Rhodens’ provided personal examples on why business ownership can be difficult. “Family and life balance is very tough because we are always working,” said Marva. Her husband agreed. “You must be aware of everything happening in your business at all times which is overwhelming.”
When asked what suggestions the couple would give entrepreneurs and business owners they said, “Meet with your local small business development center, focus on new employee onboarding techniques, and set goals for the future of your business.”
In addition to serving stand-by dishes like jerk and curry chicken, the restaurant’s menu includes signature items such as oxtail, brown stew chicken, ackee and salt fish.
