The Arizona Diamondbacks have used the first overall pick in the Major League baseball draft to take slugging Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson.
He is the first college shortstop to be chosen with the top selection in the draft since Brown University’s Bill Almon in 1974. Swanson is hitting .348 with a .411 on-base percentage and 14 homers and 61 RBIs in 64 games for the Commodores this year after making a smooth transition from second base.
Houston took LSU’s Alex Bregman with the second pick, marking the first time shortstops have gone with the first two selections since high schooler Shawon Dunston and Augie Schmidt were drafted in 1982.
Colorado also grabbed a shortstop with the No. 3 pick, taking Florida high schooler Brendan Rodgers.
