NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt’s baseball team plans to retire the No. 41 worn by Donny Everett, the pitcher who drowned last week.

Vanderbilt athletic department spokesman Kyle Parkinson confirmed the team’s plans Saturday.

Everett drowned June 2 while on a fishing trip off a Tennessee lake after the Commodores had finished baseball practice.

Everett, a 19-year-old freshman from Clarksville, was Tennessee’s Gatorade high school player of the year in 2015.

He died the day before Vanderbilt was scheduled to open NCAA Tournament competition, though poor weather delayed the Commodores’ regional opener until June 4.

Vanderbilt was eliminated from the regional after losing to Xavier and Washington on June 4.
