CLARKSVILE, TN − This Memorial Day, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is proud to announce that it has fully paid off the mortgage on the Clarksville home of fallen Army Staff Sgt. Michael Nelson. This ensures his family has a place to call home, free from financial burden, forever.
In tribute to America’s heroes, Tunnel to Towers has delivered 25 mortgage-free homes to Gold Star families nationwide, recognizing the sacrifices made by those who served and did not return home.
Nelson enlisted in July 2006, driven by a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to something greater than himself.
“The Army allowed Michael to combine his love for mechanics and aircraft with his passion for serving and protecting others. He wanted to make a difference, provide for his family, and be someone his loved ones could be proud of,” said his wife, Brittany Nelson.
During his 11-year military career, he deployed to Afghanistan and Korea. Brittany said her husband possessed an adventurous spirit, which shaped his personal life and military service. “While stationed in different parts of the world, Michael made the most of every opportunity: snowboarding in Colorado, practicing taekwondo in South Korea, and even learning to play the guitar just so he could play a song for me,” Brittany recalled.
Nelson was highly decorated for his outstanding service to our country, including the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal. On Aug.t 15, 2017, Nelson lost his life during a nighttime training exercise when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was riding in crashed off the coast of Oahu.
“Michael was the kind of person who showed up for his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. He didn’t need recognition or praise; he simply wanted to do what was right. He was a loving husband, a proud father, a loyal friend, and a dedicated servicemember who always put others before himself. Even in his absence, his love continues to guide and strengthen those he left behind. He made the ultimate sacrifice, and the world is better because of how he lived, loved, and served,” said Brittany.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their daughter, Gabrielle, who was just a year old when she lost her father.
“This Memorial Day, we honor the memory of those who stepped up to serve and never made it home. While nothing can replace a husband and father, Tunnel to Towers has ensured that Brittany and Gabrielle can remain in their home, free from the burden of a mortgage,” said Tunnel to Towers Chairman and CEO Frank Siller.
