CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Children will not be returning to the classroom, or the field, for the remainder of the academic year.  With the Governor’s announcement Wednesday, all remaining TSSAA events for 2019-20, are cancelled.

This includes all spring sports and the postponed state basketball tournaments.

TSSAA said in a release:
“This is an unprecedented time across our state and country, and we do not make this decision lightly. We thank all of the participants, their coaches, administrators, parents, and everyone else who has dedicated a tremendous amount of time, passion, and effort to high school athletics, especially these affected events.

To our senior participants – we thank you for everything you have done for your schools and communities and wish you the very best in your bright futures. This is difficult, but the lessons you’ve learned and friendships you’ve made through high school activities will last your lifetime. We look forward to the resumption of high school athletics during the 2020-21 school year, and will continue work on those events at this time. The TSSAA thanks everyone involved for their patience and understanding throughout this process.”

Parents have mixed emotions about the decision. Understanding, and appreciation, for the difficult decision made by officials that will ultimately keep their children safe and healthy. But all of them also carry an underlying sadness for what these players lost.

“We’re super sad,” said one mom of a Clarksville High baseball player. “These boys got to play only two regular season games before their worlds were shut down. We’re sad for all of the seniors who’ve looked forward to this season for as long as they can remember. This team is a family, and we love them so much.”

The TSSAA says information will be given to member schools regarding summer athletic activities in regards to the sports calendar at a date in the near future.

Montgomery County families are invited to share a photo of their student athlete on the ESPN Clarksville High School Spotlight presented by Culvers. The feature is just one way the community can celebrate the hard work and dedication of these student athletes whose time to shine was cut short.
