CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) In another in our series of stories about soldiers transitioning out of the Army, we’re going to find out about how one soldier, Adam Harrer, used the resources provided by the local USO Fort Campbell RP/6 Center.
Harrer is a 23 year veteran of the Army and has served at seven duty stations literally around the world including deployments to Kosovo, Kuwait and Afghanistan. When he left the military Harrer didn’t actually use RP/6 because the Clarksville center was not open at that time.
After a short time working at a local manufacturing facility, he reconnected with one of the RP/6 Scouts he knew, Francisco Vasquez. Through Vasquez, he was able to work toward a new job that was not only more stable but would also challenge him with room for advancement.
Harrer talked about getting out of the Army. “I think one of the things that is difficult for transitioning members is the fact that you can have all of the qualifications in the world while you’re in the military, but it’s hard to transition that skill set into civilian life,” said Harrer.
RP/6 initially helped him get a job at Fort Campbell as a career counselor while he waited for another position he wanted, which by the way, RP/6 had also informed him about. Harrer is now the Corporate Filing Supervisor in the Business Services Division for the Tennessee Secretary of State in Nashville.
A footnote to this story is that Harrer also took the opportunity to drop by the RP/6 Center in Clarksville to thank the staff, and to let them know how much he is enjoying his new career.
The Clarksville RP/6 Center is at 1885-B Fort Campbell Blvd. and is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information go to www.rp6.org or call 931-919-4313.
