Update, 2 p.m.: Traffic is moving but is still slow from about mile marker 15 to mile marker 9.

Update, 12 p.m.: The wreck happened at about 9 a.m. at mile marker 15.8 and started with a semi blowing a tire, according to Montgomery County Fire Service Chief Michael Rios.

The blown tire parts hit a sedan, which then turned in front of the semi, Rios told Clarksville Now. The semi locked up its brakes, causing the back tires to catch fire. It was hauling parts for heavy-duty plastic brooms in cardboard boxes, and the load caught fire. The driver detached from the trailer to keep the fire from spreading to the truck.

The trailer was fully engulfed when MCFS arrived. They got assistance from a county Highway Department back hoe to turn the trailer over. “It was definitely a team effort,” Rios said. Among those responding were Stations 16, 17 and 18, plus mutual aid from Clarksville Fire Rescue. Also responding were MCSO, THP, TDOT and EMS.

“Thank God for EMS being on the scene helping us stay hydrated,” Rios said. “It was another challenge working with gear on a fire in the summer heat on black asphalt.”

The sedan was able to leave the scene without significant damage, Rios said, and no one was injured.

At noon, traffic was beginning to clear near mile marker 15, but was solidly backed up past Exit 4.

Update, 11:35 a.m.: Eastbound traffic is still solidly backed up from about mile marker 15 past Exits 11 and 8 to mile marker 5.
