The season of magic and wonder is upon us! For a list of what NOT to do, you could watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but for a quicker reference, we’ve put together a list of potential hazards that you should be mindful of as you deck your halls with holiday cheer.

1. Electrical hazards: Just because there are six outlets on your power strip does not mean that you can plug anything and everything into all six and then plug the power strip into your wall outlet. Your home’s electrical system is designed to carry a specific load of electrical current. Exceeding that load could ruin your holiday season! Understand the limits of your home’s electrical system and the amp requirements of what you’re plugging into it.

2. Trips and falls: Be sure your ladder is tall enough for you to safely reach what you’re decorating and that it is set on stable ground. Be mindful of the placement of cords, wires and decorations to ensure they don’t become tripping hazards.

3. Fire risks: Be sure to keep live trees adequately watered and fresh wreaths far from heat sources. Dry needles can quickly ignite if they come into contact with candles, space heaters or hot light bulbs. Keep open flames a safe distance from flammable materials like garlands, ribbons or curtains. Better yet, invest in LED versions of candles and skip the open flame altogether!

4. Damage caused by improper use of tools and fasteners: Use the proper fasteners when hanging strings of lights and other decorative items. Staples and nails can easily puncture wires or even damage the protective coating, over time increasing the risk of electrical hazards. Also, take care when using staple guns that you’re in a position to safely operate the tool. Staples can puncture fingers just as easily as wooden beams.

5. Old and outdated decorations: Decorations from the days of yore may be nostalgic, but they use more power, older bulbs are hot, and wiring quite possibly has become frayed. It’s worth a little extra investment to make your holiday safer and more cost-effective.

From everyone at Singletary Construction, may your holiday season be magical, merry and –most of all – safe!
