CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) of Tennessee has announced that six schools in the state have been awarded the Tennessee Purple Star School Award, three of which are in Clarksville-Montgomery County School District
Winning schools include Ringgold Elementary, Rossview Middle, and Rossview High.
To be eligible for this award, schools must demonstrate a major commitment to military students and their families. Part of this commitment means having a dedicated point of contact educated in handling the affairs of military families as well as a website page with links to resources for these families.
In addition to these requirements, schools also have to select an additional activity that the administration feels best aligns with its population.
The Purple Star School Award is meant to recognize schools that do all they can to best assist their military population. In the face of challenges like transferring to multiple schools throughout the academic year, adjusting to new environments, and coping with a parent’s deployment, these students need all the support they can get from their school. This is particularly important in Clarksville, as over 30% of students in CMCSS schools are military-connected dependents.
MIC3 addresses the key educational transition issues encountered by military families: enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility, and graduation. Tennessee has 2,095 active duty military and 18,206 reserve members. The Purple Star School Award aligns with the components in the Military Interstate Compact.
