CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) At the Clarksville-Montgomery County Board of Education meeting Tuesday, three Physical Education (PE) teachers were recognized for their service as educators.

They are Mark Banasiak, Elementary Teacher of the Year from Sango, Michael Griggs, Middle School Teacher of the Year from Kenwood, and Shannon Morrison, High School Teacher of the Year from Montgomery Central.

Banasiak talked about the honor of earning the PE Teacher of the Year award. “Part of the education process is that they look at educators who are student focused, who take the state PE standards and try to implement a program where they can teach students to be lifetime movers as opposed to having a sedentary lifestyle as well as looking to teachers who are teacher leaders,” Banasiak said.

Griggs said this about receiving his award. “It’s a surprise. It’s really just something that we do on a daily basis. We teach our classes to the best of our ability and sometimes you get rewarded for your hard work and effort you put into actually teaching something that you enjoy doing,” he said

Morrison said she was surprised when she found out about her honor. “I don’t feel like I deserve this because I don’t do I feel anything that any other teacher doesn’t do on a regular basis,” she said. “We go to school, we teach what we love, and we try to make a difference in the life of a child. At the end of the day that is what matters.”

All three are being honored through the Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD). For the statewide awards this year, all three PE teachers, elementary, middle, and high school, are educators from Clarksville-Montgomery County. They will be honored in an awards ceremony November 7 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

There were two other awards presented Tuesday. West Creek Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Moseley as the 2017 Tennessee School Counselor Association Administrator of the Year. He was recognized at the Tennessee School Counselor and Administrator Leadership Institute Conference earlier this year.
