CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The historic Montgomery County Courthouse was visited Tuesday by members of the organization Tender Paws and their animal friends for a proclamation for National Therapy Animal Day.
The joint proclamation recognizing April 30 as Therapy Animal Day was presented by Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett and was also signed by Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts, who was unable to attend.
Mayor Durrett talked about the therapy dogs and their handlers.
“If you just think about what these folks are doing and the therapy they’re giving people whether it’s somebody who suffered a tragedy or whatever it is. It’s just something about a dog that brings comfort to you,” said Durrett.
Locally, the volunteers with Tender Paws and their therapy animals visit hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, schools, veterans homes, community groups, hospice, camps, and libraries.
“The most important thing about having a therapy animal is that we share our animals with everyone to love on and bring happiness and smiles. We visit children and seniors and different adults that might want to express their love to dogs,” said Sue Daulton, President of Tender Paws.
Tender Paws is the local group which is part of the national organization, Pet Partners. Tender Paws serves Clarksville-Montgomery County, Fort Campbell, Dickson County, Houston County, and Christian County.
The community event set for Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Pet Palace, 2803 Trough Springs Rd. has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather. Organizers say it will be rescheduled.
