CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Columbus Foundation will be sailing replicas of the Niña and Pinta to dock on Riverside Drive on Wednesday, June 26. They will remain at port through July 7.
These replicas of the ships sailed by Columbus during the Age of Exploration function as “floating museums,” boasting a collection of artifacts related to ship building and navigation in the 15th century. Their goal is to, “educate the public on the type of ship, the ‘caravel’, that Columbus used to discover a new world.”
The Niña is an exact replica of the original ship sailed by Columbus. It is considered the most accurate replica ever constructed. The Pinta is an exact replica in design, but somewhat larger than the original caravel to allow better access on tours.
The ships will be open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the blue tent outside of the ship.
Cost of admission is $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $6.50 for children. Children under 4 are free of charge. Tours of the ship are self-guided; however, crew members will be on board and available to answer questions about the ship and exhibits.
Information on tours and the process of rebuilding the original Niña and Pinta can be found at the foundation’s website. The Niña and Pinta will be docked in Clarksville from June 26 through July 7.
The Columbus Foundation accepts volunteers to sail with them. Positions include deckhands and cooks and last at least one month. More information on volunteering can be found here.
